The lyrics and melody are a variant of the song "The Braes of Balquhither" by Scottish poet Robert Tannahill (1774-1810) and Scottish composer Robert Archibald Smith (1780-1829), but were adapted by Belfast musician Francis McPeake (1885-1971) into "Wild Mountain Thyme" and first recorded by his family in the 1950s.

This song is so special to me - My late grandfather Barry died back in 2009 on St Patrick’s Day - He was one hundred percent Irish - I was only 7 when he died and didn’t see him a whole lot because he lived in Connecticut and I live in Virginia - It sucks and is so devastating that I don’t remember much about him and that he isn’t here to watch me grow up - I am 21 now and it still doesn’t quit hurting - every year on St Patrick’s day my mom , her mom and her sisters meet up in Spring Lake, NJ to celebrate and honor my grandpa’s life - they all go out to St. Stephen’s Irish Pub and there is a band called The Snakes that play there every year on St. Patrick’s Day - or St. Barry’s Day which is what my mom and her family call it - and play Wild Mountain Thyme in honor of my grandpa and they always say “this is for Barry’s Girls” - Miss you Pop Pop - May you Go Lassie Go and may your Irish eyes always be smiling through 💚🧡🇮🇪☘️

Just to add that this song needs to be sung with a Scottish or Irish accent. And it needs someone who can reach high notes which Ed clearly can't - he is having to force the high notes, which is a shame.

What an awful version! There have been so many wonderful singers who have sung this song and while Ed is a good songwriter he is not known for having a great singing voice. Worse still, there is no emotion in his voice which is a shame because this is a very moving song. People should stick to what they are good at.

If you actually heard the hills of aberfeldy, a song on subtract, it actually kinda sounds like this song and sounds exactly like it in some bits of this with the rhythm. I don’t know if this song inspired the hills of aberfeldy but I think they sound really alike, especially when Ed sings it. Am I the only one who thought this?
